November Traveling Exhibit -- "Kansas Homes Through the Years"

The Seward County Community College/Area Technical School Library is proud to present the traveling exhibit "Kansas Homes Through the Years."

People build houses according to tradition. When people move to a new place, they take along a lifetime of ideas about how their new world should look. Culture dictates shape, materials, tools, placement, size, and meaning. Houses built by Kansans throughout many centuries highlight the process of people creating structures within a specific physical setting, guided by the technical idea of “house” and the cultural blueprint of “home.”

This exhibit takes a look at homes through the years in Kansas. From the Native American tipis to sod houses, Victorian houses, bungalows, and ranches, this exhibit explores what motivated the change in house styles.

Kansas Homes Through the Years illustrates the changing house styles through historic photographs and other primary sources such as diary entries, building records and catalog advertisements.

This exhibit was produced by the Kansas State Historical Society with funding from the Topeka Home Builders Association.

The exhibit is open to the public for the entire month of November.
